Connecticut Workers’ Comp Exemption
We file workers’ compensation exemptions for Connecticut sole proprietors, LLC members, and corporate officers. Send us your details and we’ll confirm whether you qualify and handle the filing.
When coverage is required in Connecticut
All employers with one or more employees (full-time or part-time) must carry workers' compensation insurance — there is no minimum employee count that exempts a business generally. A secondary (non-official) source additionally states household employees working fewer than 26 hours/week are not required to be covered, but I could not confirm that specific carve-out on an official CT page myself.
Who can be excluded in Connecticut
Sole proprietors
Excluded from mandatory coverage by default (not counted as an employee). May elect to be included in coverage — or later revoke that election — using Form 75.
Partners
Partnerships with employees must cover those employees, but the partners themselves may elect exclusion from coverage by written notice to the Workers' Compensation Commission, using Form 6B-1 (which can also revoke a prior exclusion election).
LLC members
LLC members/managers have been treated as corporate officers by the Connecticut WCC since Dec. 1, 1995, and may elect exclusion using Form 6B. A secondary summary states a sole (single) LLC member is instead treated like a sole proprietor and is presumed excluded unless they affirmatively elect inclusion via Form 75 — I flag this specific nuance as unverified against an official page I loaded myself.
Corporate officers
Corporate officers are included in coverage by default but may elect exclusion (or revoke a prior exclusion) using Form 6B. Form 6B is filed with the Office of the WCC Chairperson (not a district office); electronic submission has been available since Dec. 15, 2022 via a Microsoft Forms link on the Commission's website.
How the exemption is filed
Connecticut has no state-issued exemption certificate or public exemption registry. Exclusion (or, for sole proprietors, inclusion) is a written election filed directly with the Workers' Compensation Commission using the form that matches the filer's role: Form 6B (corporate officers/LLC managers, to exclude or revoke exclusion), Form 6B-1 (partnership members, to exclude or revoke exclusion), and Form 75 (sole proprietors, to elect inclusion or revoke it). No filing fee was identified. Form 6B can be filed electronically; the others describe paper submission on the Commission's site.

- Competitive — coverage is bought from a private carrier.
Notes and open questions
I did not locate/confirm a specific Connecticut General Statutes citation on an official page during this pass, so statuteCite is left null rather than guessed. The 26-hour household-employee exception and the single-member-LLC treated-as-sole-proprietor nuance both came from WebSearch synthesis of secondary sources, not a page I directly loaded and read — flagged as lower-confidence detail within an otherwise well-verified state.
